About

Alice CHAN Yuen Shan earned her Bachelor of Arts in English with first-class honour in the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Sheffield in the UK in 2012. She started her literary writing by completing an English novel before using Chinese as the main language later. Her debut book of short stories ‘‘Fool the Wood’’ won the Hong Kong Biennial Awards for Chinese Literature in 2017. She then spent a year in South Korea where her second book of short stories ‘‘Image of Lung’’ was written. Her newest novels ‘‘City on Stage’’ and ‘‘Anatomy of Light’’ were published in Tai Wan and Hong Kong respectively in 2022. From social illnesses, humanity distortion, abnormal normality to spiritual rediscovery, sensational comprehension and memory reconstruction, Alice connects her work to both the macroscopic world and the hidden self of individuals including herself. She has much joy colouring her work with magical realism and much pain in confronting herself in a current autofiction. As a winner of the New Taipei City Literature Awards in Tai Wan, she has been publishing her work in a wide range of newspapers and journals such as ‘‘Hong Kong Literary’’ and ‘‘Ming Pao’’. She now lives and works as a bilingual writer in the UK and Hong Kong.
